CAT follows international developments in the name of Turkish architectural community by attending meetings and activities of international and regional professional organizations through its membership.
International Union of Architects (UIA), which was founded in 1948 by professional organizations of architects from 17 countries including Turkey, today gathers professional organizations from 124 countries and territories, representing through these organizations more than 1,400,000 architects worldwide. CAT hosted the 22nd World Architecture Congress in İstanbul in 2005. After undertaking various missions in the history of UIA, CAT was elected as a member for the UIA Council for the 2008-2011 term. Furthermore, CAT has participated in the UIA’s Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Program representing the UIA Region II and still contributes to the “Education” and “Architecture and Children” Work Programmes.
In the UIA General Assembly, Prof. Dr. Deniz Incedayi was elected as the UIA Vice-President on behalf of CAT for the 2011-14 term. She is responsible for the administration of the UIA Region II, covering the Eastern Europe and Middle East countries within the UIA.
Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE), which was founded in 1990 and is now based in Brussels, represents approximately 524,000 Architects in Europe, through the membership of regulatory and professional representative bodies of all European Union (EU) Member States, Accession States, as well as Switzerland and Norway. CAT, which has been attending ACE meetings in observer status since 2001, was accepted as a special status member in 2008. With this decision, CAT has become a more active member of ACE, in terms of closer exchange of information and experience with the other members and in terms of the right to vote.
CAT is a member of the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) and Forum of Architects of the Black Sea Region (FABSR), which are two regional organizations in its geographical area. CAT was the Term President of FABSR for the 2008-2009 term and Permanent Secretariat for 2009-2012.
CAT places big importance on regional activities and in this framework hosted the Balkan Architectural Conference in Istanbul on 18 June 2011. This conference, which has been traditionally organized since 1960’s, was interrupted between 1991-2004 due to political problems and conflicts in the region.
European Forum for Architectural Policies (EFAP) is an intergovernmental network gathering European countries on a single platform for discussing problems and developing solutions regarding quality in architecture and built environment in Europe. CAT, which has been working on Turkish Architectural Policy, has become a member of the Forum in October 2006. Since then, CAT participates in the EFAP meetings organized twice a year and hosted by the EU Term Presidencies.
CAT follows the activities of European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE) and European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture (ENHSA), which are focusing on the existing and future systems of architectural education in Europe.
Chamber of Architects became a member of Europa Nostra in January 2009. Europa Nostra is an organization which is formed by 220 European NGOs working in the field of heritage, is supported by 170 public and private organizations such as regional and local authorities, museums, universities etc. and by individual members whose number is constantly increasing.
CAT, which is a founding member of Turkish Construction Technology Platform (TCTP), has followed activities of the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP). ECTP aims to encourage research and development in the European construction sector and to increase the success rate of research projects related to construction sector in the EU Framework Programmes.
As another axis of work, CAT finds it important to establish relations and collaboration with some other non-governmental organizations and their representations in Turkey working for the preservation and improvement of historical environment such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Europa Nostra , European Association of Historic Towns and Regions (EAHTR).
Bilateral relations constitute an important part of CAT’s international activities, as it considers it important to establish platforms for exchange of information and experience among architects sharing the same geography. To that end, CAT signs protocols of professional and cultural cooperation with professional organizations in neighboring countries. Until now, CAT has signed protocols with 7 countries: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Syria, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Armenia and Italy (Roma)
